Run club or parkrun: which suits you?
The two work well together. Run clubs are mostly weeknight, social and about the people. parkrun is a timed, volunteer-run Saturday event with a result each week, so it's an easy way to see your progress. Many Brisbane runners do both: a social 5k midweek and a parkrun on Saturday. Brisbane Social Run Club even meets at a parkrun each Saturday.
How to choose a run club
- Pace: "Social" clubs usually have no set pace. Training sessions like Club KT's early-morning ones are more structured.
- Location and transport: The riverside clubs meet at South Bank, Howard Smith Wharves and Newstead. Plan your trip with Translink and check parking notes on each club's page.
- The after-party: Some clubs finish with coffee, food or drinks. Purchases are optional unless the club says otherwise.
- Walk first if you need to. Every club in the table above says walkers or all abilities are welcome.
Your first run club: tips
- Check socials on the day. Weather and events can change meeting points.
- Arrive 10–15 minutes early and introduce yourself to the host.
- Start at the back. Nobody minds if you walk sections.
- Bring water and a light, especially for early-morning and evening sessions.
- Keep left on shared paths. The Riverwalk and South Bank paths are busy with cyclists and commuters.
Beyond the river: trail runs and walks
Want hills and dirt instead of concrete? Mt Coot-tha, in Brisbane's west, has some of the closest bush trails to the CBD. The Mt Coot-tha Summit Track climbs from JC Slaughter Falls to the lookout. It's 1.9 km one way, about 30 minutes each way, according to Brisbane City Council. Our Mt Coot-tha Summit Track guide covers parking and tips, and the short Simpson Falls track is nearby.
