Art Gallery Walk (~5.49 km one way; QPWS lists 10.8 km return) in Carnarvon Gorge section, Carnarvon National Park — the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service walk from the Carnarvon Gorge visitor area along the main gorge track to the Art Gallery, listed at 10.8 km return (allow 4 hours) and graded Grade 3. The main gorge track is mostly flat but crosses Carnarvon Creek many times. A 600 m return side track then leads to a 62 m-long sandstone wall with about 2000 engravings, ochre stencils and freehand paintings, one of the finest examples of stencil art in Australia and a place of deep significance to the Bidjara and Karingbal Aboriginal peoples. Look for boomerangs, hands, stone axes, nets and animal tracks, and please do not touch the art. Swimming is permitted only at the Rock Pool. QPWS has closed the Ward's Canyon and Amphitheatre side tracks until 31 December 2026. Remote area with little or no phone coverage: tell someone your plans, carry plenty of water and a map. Hot and exposed: start early and carry plenty of water. Check in at GPS points to earn ACTIVE Coins. Queensland walking quest for Active Quests / PUML.
